Solar Powered Pot Farms Sweep The Nation

Soon, 30 days after the Nov. 6 election when Governor Hickenlooper signs Amendment 64, it won’t be illegal in Colorado to grow marijuana using solar power.

As reported by Earth Techling and the huffingtonpost, illegal marijuana farmers are “increasingly using solar power to operate large-scale operations in an attempt to remain off the grid.”  “We’re definitely seeing more and more of it,” New Mexico State Police Lt. Robert McDonald asserted.

A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researcher found that some $5 billion worth of electricity is used every year to grow pot indoors, the New York Times reported in 2011. That’s 1 percent of the nation’s annual power consumption, which means that indoor pot-growing operations are significant greenhouse-gas emitters. Unless they go solar, of course.
